Aims and Objectives
The WVDT was formally incorporated as a private limited company on 4th October 2005. Its Memorandum of Association states, in summary, that it exists to foster the development of community enterprises for the benefit of the population in and around the Warminster Community Area. This includes fostering partnership working to improve the local economy, education, health, employment etc.
It's first objective was to maintain the viability of the old Tourist Information Centre and develop it as a central community resource. The
Warminster Information Centre (WIC), as it is known, is now on a firm footing and has introduced a number of new ideas including promoting local B&B accommodation and information leaflets, produced jointly with the Economy & Tourism Group of the Community Partnership, listing local goods & services. Follow the WIC link on the left-hand panel for more details.
The Trust now manages the whole building of which WIC is a part under a 25 year lease from Wiltshire Council. The Citizens Advice Bureau and the Community Partnership are currently its tenants.
As a commercial concern albeit one pursuing community-benefit objectives, the Trust must trade so as to make a surplus rather
than a loss. As well as running the Warminster Information Centre (the old TIC), and managing workspace it is ready to consider taking on other projects of benefit to the community all of which must be commercially viable i.e. at least cover their costs.
Development Trust Association (now 'Locality')
In Summer 2007, the WVDT applied for membership of the Development Trust Association (DTA) in order to be able to benefit from the support it offers based on its distillation of the experience gained from the 400-plus Development Trusts already in existence. After submitting itself to a lengthy assessment process involving the DTA's Membership Health Checklist it was accorded 'Emerging Trust' membership status.
From 1 April 2011 the DTA and the British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres (BASSAC) merged to form Locality, the UK’s leading network for community-led organisations. Follow the link below for more information about Locality.
